The .658 5th gear is an awesome upgrade to any TDI. Recommended for those who drive consistently over 75 MPH, the .658 will drop RPMs by approximately 600 over the stock 5th gear, depending on wheel and tire sizes. For those who drive around 70 and on hills the .681 is probably a better choice. KERMA tuning now restores Cruise control funtionality in Mk4 PD cars!!!

If your car has over 100,000 miles it's recommended that you change your gear oil as well as your transmission seal with the 5th gear. A 5th gear mod will significantly drop the dB level in the car, making travel a much more pleasant experience for all involved. This works with all manual transmission VWs from 1996 to the present, as well as many older models. Set includes 02Z311158A large gear and 02Z311361A small gear as well as the concave washer. The retaining bolts are offered (lubed with motor oil and torqued to 60ftlbs + 90) and are recommended to replace.

Pulling the gears is VERY easy! Don't sweat the puller instead you are supposed to heat the gear using an electric heat gun to 100C, the gear(s) slide right off!

If you try to pull the gear without heating it you will crack it nearly every time.

Same thing goes for reinstalling, heat it to 100C and it slide right onto the shaft.

Yeap, I agree with the second guy, great option with the ECU reprogram, the power band can be adjusted, so you change to 5th gear as low as 50 MPH, now I cruise 80 @ 2300 RPM
before it was 2700 +
Even on steep hills, the jetta cruises on 5th gear at 60-80 MPH no problem, better fuel efficiency and lower engine noise, made the car more confy,
Don't be discouraged by the .681 advice, they're no longer available, go with the .658 is like adding a 6th gear overdrive.

Nicest thing I've installed on my Golf

I've had my 02 Golf tdI for several years without much compliant other than when on the freeway my revs get higher than I would like. Going 65 is great and all but being passed by everyone and their grandma's kinda gets old. I found the 5th gear conversion and mulled it over for a couple days, the cost was my greatest concern. Finally decided to do it and I'm ecstatic! I can get on the freeway and keep up with traffic without guzzling the diesel, I'm on my first tank now so I'll see my mpg's in a couple weeks but I'm positive that I'll get the results I've been wishing for.

Overall great, better with power modifications

Great setup with clutch, 3bar map, nozzles and vnt17 with a tune! Pulls great in 5th up hills even when towing as long as you stay in boost. Not ideal for speeds between 45 to 55mph, but fantastic on the freeway at 65+mph!!

I wouldn't recommend for stock power setups. Instead I'd go for the .7 or .681.

I thought about this gear swap for quite a while before going all the way for the.658 fifth gear.
I am pleased to say no regrets.Love the way it takes the rpm back down to a more reasonable level (55-75)=(1600-2200) approx. 03 Beetle stage 2+ pp764 & south bend clutch. Slight adjustment getting used to how easy it is to speed....lol
Set the cruise and enjoy

Should have done this years ago!

As the discussions mention this is an excellent upgrade if you typically cruise at 75+ MPH on the highway. The difference it makes in quieting the engine down by lowering the RPMs is really quite dramatic. I should have done this years ago!

The only downside to this upgrade is that 5th is less usable at speeds below ~60 MPH or so as the RPM's are so low. This might not be as big an issue if you live in an area without hills. But here in New Hampshire there are quite a few hills and the car will struggle going up them in 5th. So 4th gets used in some places where 5th was used previously.

All in all a highly recommended upgrade.

Must do for interstate driving!

Take your time and watch videos. had to remove a bur from syncro gear because it wouldnt turn when installed.FYI syncro tabs(Brass gear) go into larger slots in selector gear and loose key tabs go in smaller slots. If you don't drain fluid and just remove cover you only loose 1/2 quart and can refill and drive for a while then do full gear oil change to remove any debris from gear swap and new gear wear during break in.

Drives great at freeway speeds now. not sure what original gears were as it was an auto converted to manual 5-speed. didn't check tranny number

was 2350@70 mph 2750 @80mph

now 1750 @ 60mph 2000@ 70 mph 2350 @80 mph
