    ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) Rated Nozzles 
    ULSD aka "Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel" has brought about a new set of challenges to the Diesel Injection Systems industry. ULSD specifications more specifically "ASTM-975 §1.1.4- S15". 
    ULSD Rated Nozzles are unique in that they are literally built around an ultra-hard "Diamond Like Carbon" coating aka "DLC". DLC provide a 'Diamond like' surface with superior surface qualities in respect to smoothness and uniformity that greatly reduce sliding friction. This allows the nozzle's needle to cycle faster, with improved fuel quantity control thru better needle response.
    Another key benefit of DLC is that it results in a 50% or more increase in component life when compared to a non-DLC nozzle type running ASTM 975 USLD fuel. A nozzle is comprised of two precision made pieces, a high nickel alloy nozzle and a high carbon steel needle. A non-ULSD Rated nozzle suffers from the effects of reduced lubricity as a result of the loosely controlled lubricity specifications under ASTM 975. Because of this there is a wide range of actual fuel quality from one retailer to another.
    Unfortunately, wear is greatly increased due to reduced lubricity on the internal sliding surfaces. More specifically, ULSD fuel increases the wear rates in the needle support regions which over time (3,000-4,000 running hours) leads to decreased nozzle performance. As wear increases, the gap between the needle and nozzle widens and fuel (pressure and volume) leaks back into the injector and power and efficiency are lost due to poor pressure response of the injector nozzle.
    DLC increases the hardness of the needles sliding surfaces thus increasing its service life by reducing the sliding friction and increasing the hydrodynamic support that the needle utilizes to remain centered in the nozzle bore.  


    ULSD nozzles carry a small premium over the non-DLC types but with nearly double the service life (or more) of the nozzle your direct savings are realized not only thru greater durability but improved function of the nozzle meaning better fuel economy and lower emissions all of which translate into greater longevity of your diesel engine.

    ULSD Rated Nozzle

    DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings cover all of the internal needles sliding surfaces. The lower portion is not coated since this is a direct contact surface that requires a normal wear characteristic to generate the high pressure seal needed during pressure build up prior to and after injection.
    DLC Coatings at the Nanometer level

    The key advantage to a DLC coating is the superior sliding surface it creates between two moving parts. This allows significant reductions in friction, and far greater durabiltiy due to reduced reliance on the lubricity of the fuel.



    Standard Needle and Nozzle

    A standard needle is uncoated and relies on the end result of the precision machining. This leaves very slight imperfections in the surfaces that increase the reliance on the fuel to prevent wear. Also this slightly increases the friction and thus lowers the response time of the needle consequently lowering its overall efficiency.

    1. Good upgrade but nothing to compare to.

      I put these on my 03 wagon. Rc2 tune, 11mm injection pump, vnt15, pretty mild. Raised IQ to 7.0 and it still smokes a little too much. Planing on a stage 3 tune later down the road. These are probably overkill for a stage 2 tune, but noticeable power increase at low RPM. More power than stock nozzles for sure. on 27th Jun 2017

    3. Worth the money

      I had an existing set of injectors so had the nozzles and calibration done on these. A VERY nice addition! We did need to do the hammer mod to get the IQ in the suggested range. I did this for two 2002 Jetta TDIs and the IQ is set right around 5.5. A little haze on WOT acceleration but nothing major. One interesting fact was the timing was retarded after both installs. So make sure you check and adjust your timing after setting these up and get it back in the range you want. They should have come like this from the factory. on 1st Mar 2017

    4. What a difference!

      After speaking to Kerma and their support, I decided to start with these injectors for lightly modifying my car recently purchased 2002 Jetta TDI with 190k on it. I wanted something that would give my car a bit of a boost for acceleration and these have definitely done that. I don't plan on heavily modifying my car but I do plan on chipping it for sure and possibly a slightly bigger turbo - but that's all stuff I'll do as I save up. These were super easy to install and with the Hot Swap program my car was only down for a few hours while we installed and calibrated my car. I will note that it did make starting the car in the extreme cold (0 Fahrenheit and below) a bit harsher however I've never had a problem with it starting. I have noticed an improvement in my fuel economy as well - which surprised me since I enjoy driving my car a little more spirited than before. Definitely a good investment and Kerma did a wonderful job of suggesting the right injectors for my need. on 8th Feb 2017

    5. Fantastic! love them!

      I had just put a auto swap in my 2003 Jetta Wagon and started to get a misfire due to the injector. I replaced the injectors in about 2 hours and right away felt a power difference as soon as I started driving.

      I would recommend this for anyone that wants just a little more power out of the TDI!!!
      It should be the first thing you do so that you have plenty of fuel for the other mods you do in the future.

      I have a 3" down pipe to a 2.5" back exhaust with a stage 2 daily clutch. I'm making to the wheels 135 HP and 260 TQ. I am still getting 41 to 45 MPG daily driving. (witch includes some 3rd gear to 5th- 40 to triple digit pulls)

      One other thing, the intake tube running from behind the headlight to the intake box. I removed mine and made more power, I also got an over boost condition from it for hitting over 25 PSI just WOT in 5th with the injectors and a straight pipe. the car will learn not to over boost but it will take about a month for it to learn. no code now, and stays at 15 to 17 psi all the time.

    6. 2001 TDI Golf upgrade

      Just bought this car with 175,000 and original nozzles and compared with my friends TDI Jetta it needed some help. Kerma advised the 1019's and were very helpful in making the decision. i did the hot swap and am very happy with the results. Just have to go easy to keep tires from spinning and that with an auto.     7. Amazing

      Did the hot swap program and had them pop tested. The results are incredible. Now have a tune. My car is a monster now, smokes black real nice too when u get on it. Recommended for sure . But, if you do these nozzles stage 1 with a tune I recommend a better clutch!!! on 10th May 2015

    8. Great power upgrade, very happy

      I got these nozzles from Kerma with the flow balancing and the complementary ECU tune. I dropped them in, and the car is WAY quicker. No additional smoke from what I can tell. It's amazing how moddable these cars are! And this is a GREAT upgrade. on 27th Apr 2015

    9. Great nozzles for our car!

      We installed the 1019 nozzles after A long conversation about our future plans with our car!
      We one the first start up we smoked like a freight train due to the last timing belt change and that mechanic messing with the settings, after getting the setting to what kerma recommended she's a great little wagon now and we're not making conductors jealous!!
      We have noticed a increase in the seat of the pants dyno and a very slight increase in fuel economy and that's all good!

    10. Great nozzles

      I purchased these nozzles with the hot swap option. great mid to high range. some smoke when pedal is pushed, none at normal driving performance. With a tune I was surprised at the power increase. pulls hard now. on 11th Feb 2015
